It towers a bit over the village of Goldegg. The Goldegg moor lake stretches out at its foot and on sunny days you can see its reflection in the water. It is the optical and original centre of the village. It can not be overlooked and everything revolves around it: the CASTLE OF GOLDEGG. The village lies at the foot of the castle and from its rock ledges you can enjoy the best view in the whole of Salzburger Land.
Not all may know this: in the middle ages the castle served as protection for the road from Pongau into Pinzgau. Yes exactly, the connecting road between the two was once situated on the alpine plateau of Goldegg. Only in the 16th century did they change the main connection further down into the valley and so the fortress of Goldegg lost its strategic role. The inhabitants of Goldegg and many guests that come here every year are grateful for this move because it means that the peace and quiet has been restored once again in Goldegg. The castle has known a lot of owners over the years – in 1973 the castle was passed onto the council of Goldegg, who still own it now.
The museum within the walls of Goldegg castle gives a deep insight into the living environment of the early centuries. Whomever wants to know something about the farming, customs of the regions and the different trades is in good hands at Goldegg castle. The passionate collector and author Prof. Nora von Watteck has compiled a good collection of artefacts over the years. Furnishings, clothing, work tools and much more give a good impression of the world of our forefathers. Tours and programmes give you a better insight into the home country museum.
